Mothers-Daughters-Sons-An inescapable Bond
She walks with us in shadow and in light. She is our truth, our lie. She is our hopes, our fears, our disillusions.

We all have one; a mother.
She is with us whether present or absent. She is that essential part of us that is seeking who we are, where we come from and who we may become. She walks with us in shadow and in light. She is our truth, our lie. She is our hopes, our fears, our expectations, our disillusions. She is our security, she is our abandonment. She is our saviour, our saboteur.
The role of the mother figure features strongly in all of my books, particularly the adult ones. With Mother's Day approaching as I write this, I wanted to take a closer look at this.
It is perhaps the most significant in The Wolves That Lie Within. Daisy is tormented by the pain of being childless and has an unsettling to say the least, relationship with her mother, Marigold. But Marigold is also haunted by her past and the abuse she suffered, which greatly impacted on her role as mother. And then there is young Lily. She could just be a possible step-daughter for Daisy. Or she could be something so much more, something magical, miraculous even, that brings healing to them all.
Then there is Eve in A Secret Love For Eve. Feisty, rebellious, reckless Eve. She has never known her parentage and because of this her role as a mother to Megan and Jack is the most important thing in her life. Yet it is the very relationship with her son and daughter that she sabotages the most when her marriage ends and she embarks on a scandalous affair.
With Fae, there is the complex issue of knowing that the mother who brought her up is not her birth mother. Added to that, the knowledge that her deceased twin was her mother's favourite is enough to skew their relationship. And then there is Rowan, Fae's mother beyond the grave who reaches out to her daughter in spirit form.
Finally in the Joe Clovelly trilogy we meet Sarah. A strong, compassionate mother. But her high standards give Joe almost as much of a challenge as the evil he encounters and has to overcome.
So the books may well be supernatural, magical and containing elements of pure fantasy, and yet at a core level they are deeply human stories. And for all of us, our own personal stories all begin in the same way.
With our mothers.
An inescapable bond.
However that bond is for you, I wish to say this to you.
You are your own unique person.
Your pathway is yours and yours to walk alone.
Like the characters in my books, I wish you the courage of your heart and soul to walk it wherever, however, and with whomever you wish.
Love Dawn X
